The Luxury likes to play with ambition - the music is ambitious in its sweeping, majestic grandiosity, singer Jason Dunn is ambitious in his goals for debut album “Why We Can’t Have Nice Things” and now, the band’s album release “weekend” is following the same ambitious steps.
With two - count ’em, two - album release shows slated for next month at T.T. the Bear’s Place, the Luxury is quietly organizing one of the best two-day parties of the young year.
The first night, Feb. 23, brings in Scamper, The Appreciation Post and Violet Nine to start up proper. The following night is the real whammy, as Appomattox, The December Sound and Hooray For Earth will give the Luxes a run for their musical money.
“It’s kind of a weekendlong meeting of a mutual appreciation society,” Dunn told the Herald. “All seven bands are great, have had a great time playing together before and we’re all friends. What better party could there be?”
Different bands coming together for a cause was what spawned the Luxury in the first place. A few years back, members of the Halogens and Baby Strange performed together as Oasis cover band Faux-Way-Sis at a British Accents anniversary party.
The chemistry was so strong that the Luxury was born. And so was a sound that echoes the grandest elements of U2, Coldplay and Stereophonics. And Dunn isn’t afraid to list those bands, with other UK sensations of the ’90s, as direct influences.
“Why We Can’t Have Nice Things” was recorded, mixed and released by band members themselves, and they’re hoping a major label eventually takes notice. Either way, Dunn is pleased with the results of a journey that began while still toiling as a Halogen.
“I’ve been working on some of these songs for three years,” he said. “It seems lazy, but there were so many obstacles, self-imposed or otherwise, to finishing a record before, and now it feels right.”
